Judging from the rise in popularity of face-changing apps like Snapchat, FaceApp and Face Changer, people sure do love to see how they look with some subtle facial adjustments. But those changes aren’t real…once the app closes, the changes disappear.

This is part of the reason Dr. Dilip Madnani derives so much satisfaction from being a plastic surgeon. “I literally get to create real and lasting transformations for people who want to look on the outside as young as they feel on the inside,” he explains.

Not surprisingly, Dr. Madnani—a Castle Connolly Top Doctor practicing out of a bustling New York City office—focuses primarily on face and neck lifts. We asked him to talk about his approach, why he has confidence his patients will walk away satisfied, and what patients should expect with a face or neck lift.

“At the core of my practice is the belief that the patient’s safety, comfort, and results are what matter most,” he says. To that end, he believes all patients should work with a surgeon who has the education, expertise and skills to deliver superior results. Dr. Madnani is a double board-certified surgeon by both the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery.

Considering his high level of expertise—and expectations—Dr. Madnani is often relied on to explain face and neck lift procedures to provide a deeper level of understanding for students or those considering one or both of these operations.

He shared his thoughts with us. “In my opinion, those with lower face and neck skin laxity and looseness who want to have a more contoured neck and jawline are solid candidates for a facelift and neck lift,” Dr. Madnani says.

A facelift is often recommended for patients with significant signs of aging that will not see desired results with injectables, lasers or other minimally invasive treatments. A neck lift effectively eliminates deep creasing and sagging skin in the neck for a more youthful profile.

Regarding specifics, a facelift effectively removes excess skin and tightens underlying tissue, improving jowls and deep facial creases while restoring a more youthful face and neck profile. Incisions are placed in natural creases in the hairline or around the ear lobe, depending on the specific techniques to be used. Through these incisions, Dr. Madnani removes excess skin and repositions the underlying muscles and skin structure to achieve a younger, natural look. Skin is then re-draped over the new facial contours and excess skin removed before incisions are sutured closed.

In a neck lift, depending on the specific issues to be addressed, incisions may be placed in a natural skin crease under the chin or behind the ears to effectively camouflage the incisions. Dr. Madnani tightens underlying muscles using a variety of techniques to produce improved definition. Fat pockets can be removed with liposuction. Underlying tissue and muscle are carefully replaced to their original position before the skin is re-draped and closed.

Injectables—like Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse and Dysport—are additional steps that are frequently combined with the facelift and neck lift. “The combination of a natural volumizing procedure with a facelift or neck lift addresses common causes of facial aging in one sitting and allows patients to enjoy the best possible rejuvenation and natural-looking results for the longest amount of time.” Dr. Madnani is an ExpertInjector™.
